Volunteering with Urban Roots Reno was a very positive experience! My fellow volunteers and I helped clean up and prep the teaching farm for the upcoming season. Shoveling dirt and decomposed granite has never been so therapeutic!
It was fun harvesting Rainbow Chard and Arugula, and planting baby broccoli, kale, and cabbage was something I had not experienced in a long time.
Very enjoyable experience! Farmer Dave was incredibly welcoming and informative. We weeded an area near the herb garden, did "dead heading" on sunflowers and some other crops at the end of their season, and also cleaned up a planter of onions.
It was so nice getting a tour of the farm, and being able to cuddle with chickens and take fresh produce home!
We helped Urban Roots clear weeds from their gardens around their farm since they no longer have the labor support from Americorps.
I had a fun time volunteering and learning about the importance of local farms in Reno.
I enjoyed helping a nonprofit organization by pulling the weeds from the property.
Due to conflict of schedules, Comahig, Magalued and I had to do community service at different times this week. On April 5, 2017, I volunteered with Urban Roots from 12:30-2:30 P.M. I mostly pulled weeds and helped get the last of the cages off the rocks. Now all the rocks are placed without cages. I worked with Dave who does most of the work in Urban Roots.
On March 14, 2017, Comahig and I went to Urban Roots for community service. We were given the choice between continuing the project we started the last time we were there or to pull weeds. We initially chose to continue our last project where we cut open metal cages, removed the rocks from inside, and put the rocks back into the holes they were originally in. After an hour of working on it, we decided to pull weeds and use that to feed the chickens found near the entrance of Urban Roots. We participated in community service from 10:15 A.M. to 12:15 P.M.
Although it was hard work, it was good to know that we were cleaning up for educational camps which Urban Roots offers throughout the year.
