Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 58th Annual Reno Jazz Festival

We need assistance with the following three roles: Door Monitor, Timer and Stage Guide. Role descriptions are at the bottom of this section.

Sign-ups are for shift times. Specific roles will be assigned when volunteers arrive for their shifts.
All volunteers will learn about each role at the volunteer orientation.

Volunteers check-in for their shifts at the Joe Crowley Student Union.

All volunteers receive a Festival T-shirt, a ticket to the evening performance (the day that you volunteer), and snacks. Lunch is provided to volunteers who work two consecutive shifts. In addition, we are offering a NEW volunteer give-away this year! For each shift you sign up for, you will be entered once into the give-away. That means if you sign up for three shifts, you will be entered three times!

All volunteers must attend one mandatory volunteer orientation, which will be held Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. or Tuesday April 21 at 6:00 p.m. The orientation ensures that you have all the information you need to be a great Reno Jazz Festival volunteer!

The Reno Jazz Festival is one of the biggest jazz events in the world. Since 1962 the Festival has hosted jazz students, instructors, performers and fans to play, listen and learn. The three-day festival provides a forum for students to perform for judges and peers and to learn from jazz masters in clinics, workshops, and concerts. With more than 300 school groups, up to 9,000 participants, and 60 clinicians, performers and adjudicators, we continue to strive to ensure that every guest leaves with greater knowledge, appreciation, and love of music and the world of jazz. It is truly the students that make the Festival a vibrant epicenter of jazz each April.

Volunteer Role Descriptions
Door Monitor
Door Monitors check tickets/wristbands to make sure attendees have the proper credentials needed to enter the performance/venue. They also make sure attendees follow basic venue rules (For example, food or drink may not be allowed).

Timer
Timers work with Festival participants (band, choir, and ensemble members and directors) and adjudicators (judges) to keep performances on schedule. Timers collect each group’s set sheets and announcer forms, give the set sheets to the adjudicators and introduce each group and their performance selection (if the Director does not wish to).

Stage Guide
Each group (bands, choirs, and ensembles) will warm up in one room, compete in another room, and receive post-performance feedback from one of the adjudicators in another room. Stage Guides lead groups from their warm-up room to their performance room. They ensure the event runs on time by helping groups find their way through the venues.

All Reno Jazz Festival volunteers will be asked to:

  • Attend a one-hour volunteer orientation meeting which will be held the week prior to the festival.
  • Be familiar with the festival map and basic information.
  • Wear a Reno Jazz Festival volunteer t-shirt while on duty. A t-shirt will be provided free of charge to all volunteers.
