Sierra Nevada Journeys helps schools organize Family Science Nights as a way to help kids fall in love with science and to increase parent engagement in education. Each Family Science Night can use 3 to 8 volunteers, and the time commitment is approximately two hours. Volunteers help parents and students engage in basic science exploration. During Family Science Nights, we offer 8 to 10 stations of simple science experiments testing different concepts and processes. Volunteers don't need science knowledge to run the stations. Instructions are provided for how children should conduct the experiment along with followup questions to ask them. The evening culminates with an exciting engineering contest judged by staff and volunteers.
